Creative Process

Kate finds inspiration in many different places... a walk in the countryside, a day at the beach, the birds outside her window.  Located by the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Bonavista, Newfoundland, a lot of her inspiration comes from the natural beauty of her environment.

Designs begin with sketches and drawings laid out carefully on her light table.  All artwork is forged by hand using brushes, ink and pen on transparencies to create the different layers of a motif.  The individual layers are then scanned into her computer to create the designs and repeat patterns.  Kate's repeat patterns retain a hand drawn quality and the slight irregularity of the layered colours is reminiscent of a traditional screen print.

Whether at home, abroad or on a road trip in her 1975 Trillium trailer, Kate always keeps a sketch pad on hand and her camera ready to capture ideas for her next pattern.
